Hailing from Illinois originally, Michael Johnston completed his Bachelor's in Business Administration with a major in Accounting at Georgia Southern University in 1988. Since then, he's spent the past 35 years providing accounting and tax support to clients. Today, he leads Nichols Cauley's state and local tax (SALT) and tax credit practice, working with clients to proactively address multi-state income tax, sales tax, state nexus, and tax credit opportunities.
When talking about what he loves about his role at NCA, he says he enjoys "working with clients to learn about their individual and business goals and serving as part of the team evaluating and developing opportunities to achieve those goals." When he's not doing that, you can find Michael giving back to his community, serving as a trustee for Christian City, Inc. and as a board member for the Southern Crescent Technical College Foundation.

Michael brings the same focus he applies to tackle Class V whitewater rapids and the occasional 10K to help clients navigate complex, rough-water tax and audit issues. Michael serves as a Client Services Partner, providing financial statement audit, consulting, and specialized income tax and sales tax services to medium and large-sized businesses throughout the United States. In his day-to-day work, he collaborates with clients to address significant and complex tax issues, develops strategies for high-net-worth individuals and business entities to maximize financial opportunities, and evaluates long-term tax strategies to minimize tax impact on clients' businesses.
